マーシャにその話(はなし)をしたとき、いかめしい顔(かお)つきをした。

• Marcia looked grim when I told her the story.

彼(かれ)は判(はん)事(じ)のようにとても厳(いか)めしい。

• He is as grave as a judge.

彼(かれ)はいかめしい顔(かお)つきをしている。

• He looks stern.

かつて私(わたし)のラテン語(ご)教(きょう)師(し)は、メガネの縁(えん)からいかめしく私(わたし)を見(み)下(くだ)していた。でも今(いま)は、それはただ、彼(かの)女(じょ)が読(どく)書(しょ)用(よう)のメガネをかけていたので、それをしょっちゅう外(はず)す事(こと)をやっかいに思(おも)ったのだと分(わ)かる。つまり、私(わたし)たち生(せい)徒(と)に向(む)けてまるで蔑(さげす)んでいるように見(み)えていたものは、どうやら実(じっ)際(さい)は優(やさ)しさだったのである。

• My Latin teacher used to look down sternly on me over the rim of her glasses, but now I know it only had to do with the fact that she was wearing reading glasses and that she will have found it a nuisance taking them off all the time, so what looked like contempt towards us students might well and truly have been kindness.
