煩(はん)悶(もん)

家(か)族(ぞく)の病(びょう)気(き)を想(おも)うと、彼(かれ)は深(ふか)い懊(おう)悩(のう)煩(はん)悶(もん)に囚(とら)われた。

長(ちょう)吉(きち)は人(にん)間(げん)というものは年(とし)を取(と)ると、若(わか)い時(じ)分(ぶん)に経(けい)験(けん)した若(わか)いものしか知(し)らない煩(はん)悶(もん)不(ふ)安(あん)をばけろりと忘(わす)れてしまって、次(つぎ)の時(じ)代(だい)に生(うま)れて来(く)る若(わか)いものの身(み)の上(うえ)を極(きわ)めて無(む)頓(とん)着(じゃく)に訓(くん)戒(かい)批(ひ)評(ひょう)する事(こと)のできる便(べん)利(り)な性(せい)質(しつ)を持(も)っているものだ、年(とし)を取(と)ったものと若(わか)いものの間(あいだ)には到(とう)底(てい)一(いっ)致(ち)されない懸(けん)隔(かく)のある事(こと)をつくづく感(かん)じた。

• Chokichi keenly felt that people, as they get older, forget entirely about the worries that only young people know about and that they themselves experienced in their youth; and that they nonchalantly take this convenient disposition where they judge harshly the circumstances of the young persons born of the next generation. He felt that there was truly an irreconcilable gap between the old and the young.
